Wedgwood Sixth Grade Center

Ferguson Florissant School District uses a research based intervention system to support the needs of our students academically and behaviorally. PBIS is a three tiered support system designed to ensure each and every child has access to a high-quality education, given the individual supports needed. All students are expected to follow the district universal expectations:  

I will be Responsible, Safe, Cooperative, and Kind; I will Persevere.

At the Tier 1 Level:

Our Tier 1 team works to develop lessons related to our district-wide expectations. All students are taught the universal PBIS lessons at the beginning of the year and given refreshers monthly throughout the year. Students are acknowledged for following the expectations by receiving STARbucks & will have opportunities to spend their cash on various incentives. Monthly celebrations take place as incentives to promote students’ positive behaviors. All students are eligible to receive acknowledgment for following the expectations and will attend the monthly incentives if they meet the expectations.

At the Tier 2 Level:

Academic, behavioral, and attendance data is tracked for every student, allowing the Tier 2 team to identify students in need of additional supports to be successful. Our Tier 2 team works with select students to provide them with the guidance and support needed to successfully and positively complete their time in middle school. Each Tier 2 program is designed to support groups of students who have similar needs.

Wyman’s Teen Outreach Program® (TOP®): One day of the week, some students will engage in TOP programming through his/her PE class. TOP promotes the positive development of adolescents through curriculum-guided, interactive group discussions; positive adult guidance and support; and community service learning. TOP curriculum is focused on key topics related to adolescent health and development, including building social, emotional, and life skills; developing a positive sense of self; and connecting with others. Students will participate in at least one service learning field trip within the year.

By Brother's Keeper: My Brother's Keeper (MBK) is a district-wide mentoring program at the FFSD secondary schools that provides support to young men at home, school and in the community enabling them to have clear pathways to opportunity. Research related to the benefits of school-based mentoring has been clear.  While there are a number of benefits, mentoring has proven to impact the attitudes, performance, attendance, and behavior of students. The My Brother’s Keeper initiative aims to connect students with community leaders through the development of mentoring relationships. This program is aligned to the White House’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative and its goal is to ensure that students graduate with the skills and tools needed to advance to postsecondary education or to be prepared for careers. At the Tier 3 Level:

Our Tier 3 Team helps identify students who have not been successful academically or behaviorally after the first two tiers of interventions. At this level a student is placed on a plan to address the behaviors, academics, or attendance concerns which are impacting the students’ success. The plan involves a number of supports to surround the student with strategies for improvement. It is essential that our families are involved with the school in helping students at this level. The plan may involve a student being placed in an alternative learning classroom to complete work and streamline their academic focus. Data is collected daily at this level to determine specific supports needed for the student to be successful.
