• Physical Education Physical education serves as the foundation of a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAC) and is an academic subject characterized by a planned, sequential K-12 curriculum (course of study) that is based on the national standards for physical education. Physical education provides cognitive content and instruction designed to develop motor skills, knowledge, and behaviors for healthy active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy, and emotional intelligence. A well-designed physical education program provides the opportunity for students to learn key concepts and practice critical skills needed to establish and maintain physically active lifestyles throughout childhood, adolescence and into adulthood. Teachers should be certified or licensed, and endorsed by the state to teach physical education.

The Ferguson-Florissant School District provides physical education and opportunities for health and physical activity consistent with National and State standards. All district schools shall meet or exceed the state recommendation of health and physical education instruction. The district provides students with physical education, using an age appropriate, sequential physical education curriculum. The Physical Education curriculum promotes the benefits of a physically active lifestyle and will help students develop skills to engage in lifelong healthy habits, as well as incorporate essential health education concepts. All students have an equal opportunity to participate in physical education classes. Appropriate accommodations will be made to allow for equitable participation for all students and adaptations to physical education classes and equipment will be made as necessary.

All district elementary students in each grade will receive physical education for at least 60-89 minutes per week throughout the school year.

All district secondary students (middle and high school) are required to take the equivalent of one academic year of physical education.

The district Physical Education program will promote student physical fitness through individualized fitness and activity assessments (via the Presidential Youth Fitness Program) and will use criterion-based reporting for each student.
